Aeronautical Charts — Study Collection
The chart lessons are already organised as separate chapters. This page brings them together so that you can follow the sequence, return to a particular topic, or download the collection as one PDF.
Start with map reading and the general properties of charts. Then work through the individual projections. Open each lesson below for its full notes, diagrams and worked material. The collection PDF includes the full notes from all seven lessons; the online reader keeps each chapter separate for easier reading on a phone.
| Chapter | Open the full lesson | Topics in the existing notes |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Topographical Maps and Map Reading | Topographical chart features, relief, scale, map-reading technique and visual fix selection. Study notes with practice Q&A. |
| 8 | Convergency and Conversion Angle | Convergency between meridians, conversion angle between great circle and rhumb line tracks, with worked examples. Study notes. |
| 10 | Scale | Chart scale — representative fraction, statement in words and graduated scale line; scale conversions and typical DGCA scale calculations. |
| 11 | General Chart Properties | Perspective and mathematical projections, orthomorphism and conformality conditions, and how charts are classified by projection surface. |
| 12 | Mercator Charts | Mercator projection properties — meridians and parallels, scale expansion with latitude, rhumb lines and great circles, plotting and measurement. |
| 13 | Lambert's Conformal Chart | Lambert conformal conic chart — standard parallels, parallel of origin, constant of the cone, chart convergence, great circles and rhumb lines. |
| 14 | The Polar Stereographic Chart | Polar stereographic projection — properties, scale variation, grid navigation and plotting in polar regions. |
How to use this collection
- Read one chapter at a time and work through its examples before moving on.
- Keep the individual chapter open when revising a particular chart topic.
- Use the collection download when you want the same lessons together for offline study.
- Return to the chapter's practice questions for the material available in its own question bank.
The individual lessons remain available at their established links. This collection organises their existing teaching material rather than replacing it with a new set of answers.
