A full-scale CDI deflection on a VOR indicates the aircraft is off the selected radial by:
- A.5 deg
- B.10 deg or more
- C.15 deg

- A.325
- B.145
- C.025
- D.205
Show answer
B. 145
Bearing to the feature = 355 - 30 = 325(M); from the feature to the aircraft is the reciprocal, 145(M) - the line you plot from the feature.

A VOR's monitor removes the ident or switches the beacon off when the bearing information is in error by more than:
- A.1 deg
- B.5 deg

The monitor checks a fixed radial; a shift of more than 1 deg (or loss of modulation) makes it remove the ident/transmission or change over to the standby.

- A.211°
- B.208°
- C.221°
- D.180°
Show answer
C. 221°
Magnetic bearing to the NDB = magnetic heading + relative bearing = 311 + 270 = 581 - 360 = 221. Drift does not enter.

- A.149°
- B.173°
- C.169°
- D.161°

Plotting an ADF bearing on a Lambert chart, the bearing should be plotted:
- A.from the NDB meridian, applying chart convergence
- B.from a line parallel to the aircraft's meridian, drawn through the NDB
- C.from the aircraft position directly
- D.from the mid-meridian
Show answer
B. from a line parallel to the aircraft's meridian, drawn through the NDB
An ADF bearing is measured at the aircraft against the aircraft's meridian. Draw that meridian's direction through the NDB and plot the reciprocal from it; on a Lambert the straight line then approximates the great circle.

On a cross-country from place A to B, distance 135 NM, due to crosswind the aircraft drifts and ADF reads 170° at a distance of 90 NM. How many degrees of heading correction should be applied to go direct to station B?
- A.30° port
- B.30° starboard
- C.15° port
- D.15° starboard
Show answer
B. 30° starboard
ADF 170 on a track of 090 puts the aircraft 10 deg left of track; after 90 of 135 NM the closing angle is 10 x 90/45 = 20, so the total correction is 30 deg to starboard.

- B.065 and 245
- C.062 and 242
- D.248 and 068
Show answer
A. 068 and 248
Track = heading + starboard drift = 065(T); magnetic = 065 + 3W = 068(M). Flying TO the station, the magnetic track is the QDM: 068; the QDR (from the station) is the reciprocal, 248.

Show answer
B. 083

An aircraft homes to an NDB (keeping the relative bearing at 000) on QDM 060 with a crosswind. Its path over the ground is:
- A.a straight line on 060
- B.a curve that ends with the aircraft heading into wind near the beacon
- C.a straight line displaced downwind
- D.a circle round the beacon
Show answer
B. a curve that ends with the aircraft heading into wind near the beacon
Homing points the nose at the beacon all the time; the wind blows the aircraft sideways, the heading keeps changing, and the path curves until it arrives roughly into wind. Tracking (heading off for drift) gives a straight path.

B. its pulse pairs are sent at a random (jittered) rate and it looks for replies with the same pattern

ICAO sectors: 1 = parallel entry, 2 = offset (teardrop) entry, 3 = direct entry.

Tracking inbound to an NDB on QDM 090 with 10 deg starboard drift, the heading and ADF relative bearing are:
- A.080 and 010
- B.100 and 350
- C.090 and 000
- D.080 and 350
Show answer
A. 080 and 010
Starboard drift: steer left of track, heading 080. The beacon is on track ahead, 10 deg right of the nose: RB 010.

Heading 090(M) with the NDB dead ahead (QDM 090). To join the inbound QDM 060 with a 45 deg intercept, the heading is:
- A.105
- B.015
- C.060
- D.135
Show answer
A. 105
The aircraft is on QDR 270, north of the inbound track 060 (which comes from QDR 240). Turn right of the required track by 45 deg: 060 + 45 = 105, then turn onto 060 as the ADF reads 315 (45 left).

The DME ground beacon:
- A.radiates omni-directionally and provides range only
- B.provides a bearing
- C.radiates a rotating beam
- D.needs line of sight only for bearing
Show answer
A. radiates omni-directionally and provides range only
The beacon answers interrogations from all directions with an omni-directional aerial; it gives slant range, no bearing.

With the ADF needle pointing to relative bearing 180, the aircraft is:
- A.flying towards the NDB
- B.flying away from the NDB with it directly behind
- C.abeam the NDB
- D.overhead the NDB
Show answer
B. flying away from the NDB with it directly behind
Relative bearing 180 = the beacon is on the tail: the aircraft is flying away from it (QDR = heading).

Which of these is NOT an error that affects VOR bearings?
- A.site error
- B.propagation (terrain/scalloping) error
- C.equipment (station and airborne) error
- D.coastal refraction
Show answer
D. coastal refraction
Coastal refraction bends LF/MF surface waves - an ADF error. VOR (VHF line of sight) suffers site, propagation/scalloping and equipment errors.

Without changing the OBS or position, the aircraft turns from an inbound to an outbound heading. The CDI and TO/FROM indication:
- A.reverse
- B.do not change - VOR indications do not depend on heading
- C.show OFF
- D.swing to centre
Show answer
B. do not change - VOR indications do not depend on heading
The VOR receiver uses only the radial the aircraft is on and the OBS setting; heading never enters. What changes is whether "fly toward the needle" is still correct - flying the opposite way gives reverse sensing.
