Free vs Paid DGCA Question Banks
Every month a cadet asks me the same question in slightly different words: should I pay for a DGCA question bank, or is free enough? The marketing pages answer with rankings and pass-rate screenshots. I will not. Here is the honest split — what you actually need to clear papers, what free self-study can cover, and when paying for live classes is worth it.
What a DGCA question bank is supposed to do
A question bank is not a syllabus. It is a practice tool. Its job is to put you under the same pressure the hall will: multiple-choice questions, a clock, and the habit of eliminating wrong options. If a bank only gives you PDFs of remembered papers with no explanations, you are memorising shapes — and DGCA rewords questions often enough that shape-memory fails.
What you actually need from any bank, paid or free:
- Coverage of the real papers — Navigation (with Radio Nav and Instruments inside it), Technical General, Meteorology, Air Regulations, Technical Specific, and RTR(A) where it applies.
- Explanations you can trust — not a green tick with silence. Wrong answers taught to a student pilot are a safety problem, not a typo. See how answers are verified on this site.
- Timed, full-length practice — chapter quizzes alone will not prepare you for a 100-question Navigation paper. You need exam-mode papers and previous-year papers under the clock.
Free vs paid — the real trade-offs
Paid banks are not automatically better. Free banks are not automatically worse. The trade-offs I see in practice:
| What you want | Free self-study (Ghost Aviator) | Typical paid PDF / app bank |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter notes + quizzes | Included, free | Often sold separately or thin |
| Timed mock exams | Exam mode free | Sometimes; sometimes just static PDFs |
| RTR(A) voice practice | Radio simulator free | Rare; usually theory-only |
| Live doubt-clearing with an instructor | Optional live classes (paid) | Sometimes bundled; quality varies |
| Price | Self-study: ₹0 | Often thousands per subject or per year |
I will not invent pass rates or “best coaching” rankings for either column. Those claims are marketing. What clears papers is disciplined practice against a bank whose answers you can defend.
Why Ghost Aviator keeps self-study free
Ground study should not be the part of CPL training that bankrupts a cadet. Flying hours dominate the bill — see pilot training cost in India. Charging again for notes and mocks on top of that is a choice other platforms make. This one does not.
Everything for self-study stays free permanently: chapter notes, the question bank, past papers, mock exams, video lectures, and the RTR(A) simulator. That is site policy, not a launch discount.
The only paid part is optional live online ground classes with me — small batches, subject by subject, for students who want a live instructor rather than (or in addition to) solo study. Prices and batches are on /live-classes. If you never join a live batch, you still keep every self-study tool.
A practical way to decide
- Open CPL subjects (or ATPL if that is your track) and work one chapter end-to-end: notes, quiz, then review mistakes.
- Sit one full paper in exam mode under the clock. If you are consistently near the pass mark after honest practice, you do not need a paid bank.
- If the same chapters keep failing and self-study is not fixing it, consider a live batch for that subject — not another subscription you will not open.
Free is enough for the self-study half of the job. Paid is optional coaching, not a second question bank tax. Start with the free tools; upgrade only where you are actually stuck.

Quick answers
Is Ghost Aviator free?
Yes. All the self-study material — notes, question banks, past papers, mock tests and the RTR(A) radio simulator — is free for every student pilot, and stays free. Live online ground classes with the Captain are the only paid part of the site.
Should I pay for a DGCA question bank or use a free one?
Pay only if you need something free self-study cannot give you — usually a live instructor for a weak subject. Notes, question banks, past papers, mock exams and the RTR(A) simulator on Ghost Aviator are free permanently; live online classes with the Captain are the optional paid part.
