Over the sea TS are more frequent

  1. A.afternoon
  2. B.night
  3. C.early morning
Show answer

B. night

Over the sea, thunderstorms are most frequent at night: the sea stays warm while the air above cools by radiation, which steepens the lapse rate. Over land the peak comes in the afternoon.

Q8Asked in 3 sittings:Jul 2022 · OLODE 05Jun 2025 · Regular 02May 2026 · OLODE 04

A mature thunderstorm has strong

  1. A.Updraughts only
  2. B.Downdraughts only
  3. C.Updraughts and downdraughts both
Show answer

C. Updraughts and downdraughts both

The mature stage starts when rain begins to fall. Falling rain drags air down beside the updraughts, so both exist together - the most violent, turbulent stage.

In the cumulus (developing) stage of a thunderstorm, the vertical currents are

  1. A.Updraughts throughout
  2. B.Downdraughts throughout
  3. C.Updraughts and downdraughts side by side
Show answer

A. Updraughts throughout

In the cumulus stage, latent heat keeps the cloud warmer than its surroundings, so the whole cloud rises in updraughts. Downdraughts appear only with the rain in the mature stage.

Q12Asked in 2 sittings:Jul 2022 · OLODE 05Oct 2025 · OLODE 07

Rain starting to fall from a thunderstorm indicates the

  1. A.Developing (cumulus) stage
  2. B.Mature stage
  3. C.Dissipating stage
Show answer

B. Mature stage

The start of precipitation at the surface marks the beginning of the mature stage.

Q13Asked in 2 sittings:Dec 2023 · RegularFeb 2025 · OLODE 02

A thunderstorm in the dissipating stage is characterised by

  1. A.Updraughts only
  2. B.Downdraughts
  3. C.Updraughts and downdraughts
Show answer

B. Downdraughts

In the dissipating stage the downdraughts spread through the whole cell and cut off the supply of warm moist air; the storm rains itself out.

Q14Asked in 2 sittings:Oct 2024 · OLODE 07Jun 2025 · Regular 02

Norwesters occur during

  1. A.January-February
  2. B.March-May

Q18Asked in:Dec 2025 · Regular 04

The most severe activity of a single-cell cumulonimbus occurs during the

  1. A.Cumulus stage
  2. B.Mature stage
  3. C.Dissipating stage
Show answer

B. Mature stage

Heavy rain, hail, lightning, gust fronts and the worst turbulence all come in the mature stage, when updraughts and downdraughts work side by side.

In a METAR, +TSRA is associated with which cloud?

  1. A.CB
  2. B.NS
  3. C.AS
Show answer

A. CB

TS is a thunderstorm and +RA heavy rain. A thunderstorm comes only from a cumulonimbus, so +TSRA means a CB overhead or nearby giving heavy rain.

Q23Asked in 0 sittingsalso in an undated previous-attempt paper

The most severe weather - destructive winds, large hail and tornadoes - is generally associated with

  1. A.Slow-moving warm fronts
  2. B.Squall lines
  3. C.Fast-moving occluded fronts
Show answer

B. Squall lines

When thunderstorms organise into a line along or ahead of a cold front they form a squall line, and these are far more violent than isolated air-mass storms: the cells feed each other, the gust front is continuous, and this is the structure that produces destructive surface winds, giant hail and tornadoes.
