Q1Asked in 3 sittings:Jul 2022 · OLODE 05Mar 2025 · Regular 01Oct 2025 · OLODE 07

When the density altitude increases, the air density

  1. A.Increases
  2. B.Decreases
  3. C.Remains unchanged
Show answer

B. Decreases

A high density altitude means the air is as thin as it would be much higher up in the ISA. Less dense air gives less lift and less engine power - the hot, high aerodrome problem.

Q2Asked in 2 sittings:Oct 2025 · OLODE 07Mar 2026 · Regular 01

Near the surface, air density at the poles compared with the equator is

  1. A.Higher
  2. B.Lower
  3. C.The same
Show answer

A. Higher

Cold air is denser than warm air, so the cold polar surface air is denser than the warm equatorial air.

Q3Asked in 2 sittings:Jun 2025 · Regular 02Mar 2026 · Regular 01

Above about 8 km, air density at the poles compared with the equator is

  1. A.Higher
  2. B.Lower
  3. C.The same
Show answer

B. Lower

The picture reverses aloft. The polar air is so dense that most of its mass is packed low down, so above about 8 km there is less air left over the poles than over the equator - density is lower there.

Q4Asked in 2 sittings:Dec 2024 · Regular 04Apr 2026 · OLODE 03

Density altitude is

  1. A.The ISA altitude at which the prevailing pressure occurs
  2. B.The ISA altitude at which the prevailing density occurs
  3. C.The height above the aerodrome
Show answer

B. The ISA altitude at which the prevailing density occurs

Density altitude is the height in the standard atmosphere that has the same density as the air you are actually in. The first option describes pressure altitude.

Q5Asked in 2 sittings:Mar 2022 · RegularJul 2025 · OLODE 05also in an undated previous-attempt paper

For a given pressure and temperature, moist air has a ____ density than dry air

  1. A.Higher
  2. B.Lower
  3. C.Same
Show answer

B. Lower

Water vapour (molecular weight 18) is lighter than dry air (about 29). Replacing some air with vapour lowers the density, so humid air gives poorer take-off performance.

Q6Asked in:Oct 2023 · OLODEalso in an undated previous-attempt paper

Compared with a sunny day, the runway length required on a rainy day is

  1. A.More
  2. B.Less
  3. C.Same
Show answer

A. More

Rain means a warm, humid, low-pressure day with a wet runway: lower air density cuts engine and wing performance, and the wet surface lengthens the stop. Both push the runway length required up.

Our independent check could not confirm this answer from the official sources we hold; treat it with care and confirm with your instructor.

Q7Asked in:Sep 2024 · Regular 03

Pressure altitude and density altitude are the same when the temperature is

  1. A.0 °C
  2. B.The ISA standard temperature for that level
  3. C.Below freezing
Show answer

B. The ISA standard temperature for that level

Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature. When the actual temperature equals ISA, there is nothing to correct and the two are the same.

Q8Asked in:Jul 2025 · OLODE 05

Air is less dense in

  1. A.High altitudes
  2. B.Warm air
  3. C.All of these
Show answer

C. All of these

Density falls as altitude rises (lower pressure), as the air warms (it expands) and as humidity rises (water vapour is lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen it replaces). All of these give less dense air.

Q9Topic came up inalso in an undated previous-attempt paper

In the ISA, the air density at mean sea level is

  1. A.1.225 kg/m3
  2. B.1.013 kg/m3
  3. C.0.905 kg/m3
Show answer

A. 1.225 kg/m3

The ICAO Standard Atmosphere fixes sea level at 15 °C, 1013.25 hPa and a density of 1.225 kg/m3. Density falls off with height much as pressure does, roughly halving by 22 000 ft, and it is density rather than pressure alone that decides engine power, lift and true airspeed.

These are candidates' recollections, not official DGCA papers: wording can differ from the paper as set. Every answer was checked against the DGCA CARs, AIP India, ICAO documents or worked calculation (independent check completed 17 Oct 2026). Spotted a mistake?
